What an eclectic week. Enjoy.
F*ck You from Bad Religions 16th album True North
From LA, these punk mofo's been Bad since 1979 (and so have I). I went through Bad Religion's music catalog and don't recognize, or even really liked anything. Does this make me a hater? Maybe. But I'll take it. And even quote them: "F*ck You!" You made be bad-ass with these legends at The Roseland April 14th.
Little Blimp from The Joy Formidable's 2nd album Wolf's Law
Many music greats have come from Wales: Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, er... Charlotte Church. Anyways, The Joy Formidable have gathered quite the hype from other music reviewers. I'm not buying it. Just another alternative band from overseas.
Whore from FIDLARS album FIDLAR
While I'm a huge fan of Fiddler on the Roof and Whores, I am not so much into this band. Damn. They too seem to have a lot of hype, but I'm sensing that there's not a lot of 'must have albums' competition. I had a hard time with this LA alta-rock band, but they would rather skateboard than make music. I'm not a total hater of Fidlar, I really like this song Whore. Please read this from their Facebook page:
"FIDLAR are slackers at heart. The only thing they really care about is skateboarding; trivial things like doing their homework and making the grade in school have little meaning to them. But when their adopted Vietnamese brother turns up dead after discovering an error in the shipping records at his place of work, FIDLAR begins to suspect something more. Refusing to accept the police's theory of suicide, FIDLAR launches their own investigation, determined to uncover the truth of what really happened to their brother."
Side note: "whore" as a word isn't recognized by my Blackberry, and that makes me happy.
Someday from The Growlers 3rd album Hung at Heart
Another California band, they are skipping Portland on their national tour but DID play at Bunk (??) during MFNW here last September. There's something about this album that makes me want more. I must say I'm disappointed I can't see them live soon. This 'alternative' band has coined the term 'beach goth'.
That guitar riff you hear from the intro to Hawaii 5i-O with the modern garage/coffee shop ring. I'm in.
Be My Baby from Aaron Neville's album My True Story
If only I had access to the video of my childhood best friend, and myself lipsyncing to this Dirty Dancing favorite... Alas, I don't. Mr Neville is from Louisiana and started his career in 1966. We know his duets with Linda, but to know he could get down and grove his true story all over our asses, well thank YOU.
Binary Mind from Ra Ra Riots 3rd album Beta Love
From Syracuse, NY, this band has changed genres of music since it's dawning in 2006. After they lost their cellist, what do you do? Go synthpop of course. I like Ra Ra Riot, but haven't downloaded a single...er...single. Perhaps this album will change my binary Mind. oh snap.
Running outta moonlight from Randy Houser's album How Country Feels
Mr Houser is from Mississippi. This is this country artists 3rd album, and it made me smile.
Grown up Calls from Toro Y Moi's album Anything in Return
I liked their 2012 album more.
Bones from Gary Allan's album Set you Free
Oh Gary from California, this is your 9th country album since your debut in 1996. That's pretty good stats. I must say I'm more impressed with the country folk this week than any other genre. I dare you not to like this country song. Kick it, Gary.
Castaway from Kris Krisofferson's album Feeling Mortal
From Texas, he's been an outlaw country singer since 1966. I just saw him in the cutest movie Joyful Noise. Seriously. Dolly don't do no wrong. And Kris gave us Janis Joplin singing 'Me and Bobby McGee'. I heard him on NPR the other day, please listen:

New Music Tuesday January 15, 2013
I am floored by two artists this week (2 Cellos and Cristina Pato), intrigued by two others (The Low Bellows and Serafina Steer), and there are three others that of course out of this whole blog are the only ones highlighted on ITunes. Enjoy!
Stupid Things by Yo La Tengo's 13th Album Fade
In case you don't recognize the band name yo La Tengo, they DO play under the alias Condo Fucks.
True Story. This New Jersey band got their start in 1984 as a hubby and wife duo. Their band name origin is pretty cute - thanks Wiki. They won't be replacing anyone in my heart as a new love, but I wouldn't turn them off if they popped up on my Pandora. Alternatively subtle, I want to take a nap in the warm sunlight while I 'Fade'...
Supermassive Black Hole featuring Naya Rivera from 2 Cello's album In2ition
Yes this is the Muse hit track, but these two cellists bring pop rock to an unlikely instrument. Sexy and erotic, light the candles and invite your infatuation over for a rendezvous in front of the fire before Spring comes. They were featured on Glee during the Michael episode, playing Smooth Criminal while Santana boasted naughty Sebastian's socks off into confession. They must have enjoyed themselves, these 2 cellists from Croatia, because they invited Santana/Naya to be featured on their album. Rock on.
Sorry seems to be the hardest word from the Tenor's 3rd album Lead with your heart
I am so sorry, my dear Canadian quartet, but Il Divo will always be #1 in my boy band serenade of cheesy love songs from the heart. Beautiful, and please keep trying. This is only your third album since you started in 2003. And I believe Il Divo is off the market now. I love this song, nice choice.
I come apart featuring Florence Welch from ASAP Rocky’s debur album Long Live A$AP
Yes what we need from Rakim Mayers of New York is to be another hip hop artist with an attitude and an ego to title his first album LONG LIVE A$AP with a DOLLAR sign as the S. With that said, thank you for inviting Florence Welch of Florence and the Machines to sing with you. Holy cow I might even download this track. I was cringing at the sight of the song titles and their collaborations until Florence jumped off the page. You are slightly forgiven for this debut, A$AP.
World of Love from Serafina Steer’s 3rd album The Moths are Real
This folk classic Brit is definitely what she self described ‘the Kitchen Sink’. The album is haunting and off the mark for what has been speaking to me lately but I can’t compare her to any other. And for this I commend Serafina. Unique task fulfilled.
You can be all kinds of emotional from The Lone Bellow’s self title album The Lone Bellow
I believe this is Lone Bellow’s debut album. There isn’t a lot of information about them on the internet but self described as Brooklyn country can’t be a bad thing. This song is one I would love to play for someone sometime.
Giatango ( A Cristina Pato) from Cristina Pato’s 5th album Migrations
If you love sensual jazz, breathtaking piano, and sassy bagpipes, Cristna’s your gal. This 32 yr old Spaniard blew me away with her NPR interview last Saturday. Actually I was told about it and looked her up (THANKS, KARIN!)– please listen. Even Yo Yo Ma has her traveling with him on tours.

New Music Tuesday January 8th, 2013!
Lucky Charlie from Dropkick Murphy's 8th album Signed and Sealed in Blood
This Celtic punk Bostonian band started in 1996. I first heard them when the film preview 'The Departed' blared 'Shippin out to Boston' on the tv. The bagpipes, accordion, Irish whiskey vocals and story telling sucks you in and 'dropkicks' you out a fan. Pun intended. Please come and play at halftime during a Timbers Game. Please???
Looks good with trouble form Solange's EP True
I was excited to hear what this mysterious Solange had for me until I realized she is Solange Knowles. Oh man, just cuz sis Beyonce doesn't use her last name doesn't mean its uber cool to axe the last name. She is trying to make a name for herself other than Beyonce's sister. Keep trying, Solange. You are almost there.
I am bulletproof from Black Veil Brides album Wretched and Divine: The Store of the Wold Ones
This glam metal band from Hollywood created their 3rd studio album as a rock opera concept. This is why I'm overlooking the 'metal' and diving in. The history of this albums artwork stopped me:
"It depicts a child holding the Black Veil Brides pentacharm standing up against an army of evil."
This innovated band toured before recording and releasing music. They were hungry and ready to roll.
Star Crossed Lovers from Joe Lovano's 23rd album Cross Culture
From Cleveland, this Grammy award sax player got his start in the 1980's. He's worked with many greats in jazz music, studing at Berklee College of Music after being exposed to music at a young age by his father. This is a beautiful album, and the saxophone is my favorite instrument. I want to stroll the Seine River while Joe follows me, playing this whole record.
Passage to Bangkok from Tracy Thornton's album Baked in the Sun
A nationally recognized steelpan player who has been sought out to open a wide variety of artists such as The Ramones, Dave Matthews Band, Kenny Chesney, Santana, Jimmy Buffet, Barry White, and Yanni. Tracy has a skill and is willing to guest play at a school near you. However one look at the cover and song titles and your local principal will probably not be inviting Tracy to entertain, man.
Chanterelle from Food's 7th album Mercurial Balm
This Norway jazz duo started in 1998. I found this a little sleepy of a jazz band but hey, not every album in my repertoire moves me to dance.
Coming down from Pop Levi's EP Starlight and Wonder, Vol 1.
I have dubbed Pop Levi the artist formally known as Prince of the UK. Jonathan James Mark Levi skipped church to write music when growing up. Not me, I wrote songs while IN church. But this isn't about me. Wait, is it? Shit.

TBA 2013 Releases
Here is an interesting list of reported artists that will be releasing new music this year. I see some repeats from my list last year that were a no show in 2012, hopefully they will bring it in 2013 (ahem, Pearl Jam?). Also, I see several artists on this list that released albums last year (Toto y Mois, Nelly Furtado, Justin Bieber...). And there are a few artists I am pretty excited to hear from (Cher, Queens of the Stone Age, Dita Von Teese).
So here you go - Enjoy.
